Noriko Saito was born in Ashikaga, Japan, in 1955. She studied cultural history and geography in Japan and Germany. Later, while studying art in Germany, she was introduced to Goethe’s Theory of Colours. These experiences have formed the foundation of her subsequent artistic practice. In 1990, she completed her postgraduate studies at the Berlin University of the Arts. She lived and worked in Berlin before settling in Toronto in 2000. Her work has been exhibited in Europe, Japan, and Canada since the late 1980s. She is interested in change and the cycles found in nature and within ourselves, as well as those that arise in culture and history. Her themes – water, circles, and images of plants, particularly seeds – encompass all cycles and serve as metaphors for life.
